Carer visa

Carer Visa

The Carer Visa is a permanent visa that allows individuals to remain in Australia to provide long-term care for a relative who has a severe medical condition and cannot reasonably access care options within Australia. The carer must be committed to providing substantial, ongoing care and support for their sponsoring relative.

Key Requirements for the Carer Visa

The essential requirement for this visa is that your relative’s medical condition must be assessed by Bupa Medical Visa Services before the Department of Home Affairs can make a decision on your visa application.

Medical Assessment Details:

The assessment provides a rating or score based on the Impairment Tables from the Department of Human Services.
The assessment evaluates the extent of your relative’s ability to perform everyday tasks such as eating, dressing, hygiene, and mobility, and whether they will need assistance for at least the next two years.
The current minimum threshold rating for the medical condition is 30.

Visa Options for Carers

There are two visa subclasses available, both of which are permanent visas:

Subclass 116 (Offshore Carer Visa):
For applicants who are outside Australia at the time of their visa application and must also be outside Australia when the visa is granted.
Subclass 836 (Onshore Carer Visa):
For applicants who are inside Australia during the visa application process and must remain inside Australia when the visa is granted.

Eligibility Requirements for the Carer Visa

To apply for either subclass of the Carer Visa, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

Sponsorship Requirement: The sponsor (the person needing care or their partner) must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia.
Relationship to Sponsor: The applicant must be related to the sponsor. Eligible relationships include partner, child, parent, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, or step-relative equivalents.
Medical Condition: The applicant must provide sufficient evidence that their relative has a long-term medical condition that requires ongoing care.
Lack of Available Care: The care needed cannot be provided by a hospital, nursing facility, or community welfare services in Australia.
Character and Health Requirements: The applicant must meet the character and health requirements for the visa.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

Other eligibility requirements may apply depending on individual circumstances, and further documentation may be necessary to prove the need for care.
